Setting up an emergency department is not a standard project. At the LUMC in Leiden, the Casualty is the beating heart of the hospital - a place where all specialisms come together, under high pressure and with one aim: optimal patient care. INTOS worked closely with LUMC on the complete renewal of the permanent interior. The result: an SEH that exudes tranquillity and overview, is fully thought through and functioned 100% from the very first moment.
LUMC was looking for a reliable partner to realise durable and functional custom-made interiors for their renovated emergency room. They had already had good experiences with INTOS in renovating reception desks and patient rooms. The requirement for this new department: hygienic, homely, smartly furnished and future-proof.
The choice of INTOS was a logical consequence of previous successful collaborations. Project leader Thorvald Laken from LUMC:
"We got rid of all the problems because we were on such a good path with INTOS. They are a reliable sparring partner, think creatively and deliver quality that is truly 'LUMC-worthy'."
LUMC appreciates the way INTOS takes work off its hands. Everything was prepared, tested and thought through in detail - well before the first shovel went into the ground. This ensured a smooth realisation and immediately working facilities.
INTOS collaborated on the design of the interior concept from the very first idea, in close cooperation with the hospital. A lot of knowledge had already been built up from previous projects, which could be directly applied in the A&E project. Prototypes were developed, tested with cleaning agents, and optimised for ease of use and sustainability.
The interior was executed in warm, homely materials - such as specially coated wood - that match the hospital's new standards. Functional customisation was combined with smart solutions, such as folding tables, hidden piping and thought-out pantries.
The biggest challenge? The enormous complexity.
"Everyone was looking forward to this renovation," says Thorvald Laken, LUMC project manager. "The SEH is an empire within the hospital. Everything had to be right: technical, logistical and organisational."
Moreover, space was at a premium. Among other things, INTOS developed in-wall sliding electric doors, gaining valuable square metres. The interior was also adapted to neatly conceal dressing trolleys, for example - details that make a big difference in the practice.
The whole process took years; the first sketches date back to 2016. Yet the move-in went smoothly:
"During the move, the first patients came in and could be helped immediately. From the first hour, everything worked 100%." - Thorvald Laken
INTOS supplied a wide range of fixed interior elements for the ED, including:
Pantries with raised tops and smart storage niches
Pass-through boxes with wooden veneer
Bed backs with concealed medical facilities
Electric sliding doors by Tormax
The nursing station with space for treatment trolleys
Furnishing of operating rooms and other SEH areas
The space is now uncluttered, homely and functional. Staff are enthusiastic, patients experience peace of mind and other hospitals come to look for inspiration.
"Everyone says: what a tranquillity here. And that's exactly what we wanted to achieve." - Thorvald Laken
